Certifications
I received my training in Elementary Education from Brigham Young University-Idaho in K-6 education. My certifications allow me to teach K-8 students in all subjects, although I have typically focused on math and reading when helping students outside of school. I have taught sixth grade for three years in Utah State and keep a current license in the State of Idaho.
Services Offered
Now accepting students grades K-8 in all subjects. Students needing help in reading and/or math will be asked to take a diagnostics test before beginning tutoring so that I am better prepared to help them in specific areas.
Tutoring times are set up twice weekly, for 30 minutes. Depending on the student, tutoring sessions will include going over target areas from the diagnostic testing, answering questions on current material being taught in school, homework help and homework correction.
Tutoring Approach
I strongly believe that students need to know how to do their math, reading, and other subjects, not just the tricks and short cuts. During tutoring, we will explore how to find answers to problems or how to notice patterns in reading and math through hands on exploration and real life application. Learning is hard work, but it's also a lot of fun.
For example:
Students learning about fractions will apply fraction knowledge to real life by baking cookies, planning for a party and "purchasing" supplies for an allotted amount of guests, etc.
Students learning the alphabet and how to read will use shaving cream, sand, and/or salt to write the letters in a bowl.
Students who struggle to enjoy learning will have the opportunity, with parental permission, to *attend events or activities that will require them to learn and understand what is being taught in school. *Parents are encouraged to attend these events with the student.
Tutoring Location
One on one tutoring sessions are located at my home in Utah Valley. Please contact me for more information. Parents are encouraged to be present during tutoring, either sitting in the living room or waiting in the car. Tutoring sessions are back to back and it's difficult to give the time to each student if parents are late for pick-up.
Tutoring Availability
At this time, I am accepting two new students, twice weekly for 30 minutes. Tutoring begins with the new school year in September 2015 and will go as long as you feel your student is needing services. If you wish to end tutoring, you must do so a month in advance so the slot can be opened up for others.
Prices
Tutoring is $25 an hour.
Eight 30 minute sessions per month.
*I do not recommend an hour of tutoring at a time simply because kids are busy with school and tend to have a harder time focusing for that duration. If you feel that an hour would be best for your child, we will set up a once weekly session.
Registering for Tutoring
Once you decide that you'd like to have your student receive tutoring services, you will be asked to complete the following:
1. Tutoring Contract: This contract is only month by month. It will need to be filled out by the parent.
2. Student Evaluation: This evaluation can be filled out by a parent, but I would prefer that your child's teacher give input, if possible. Because of FERPA laws, I cannot request this information without your consent.
3. Payment in advance: Tutoring is twice a week, 30 minutes each. That is $25 a week and $100 a month. Payment must be given in advance either by check or cash or through the PayPal account on the right sidebar. If you are unable to make a tutoring appointment, please reschedule, as it is nonrefundable.
